Hong Kong

Kowloon

Kowloon is one of the most touristic site in Hong Kong. You can find lots of hotels and shops there. Though there are a lot to see there, the musts are the night markets, Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade, and Nathan Road. You can access to the Hong Kong Island from the Kowloon public pier by riding on the star ferry, which also is the must.

The Western District

Western District is the area where you can feel the non-modernized hong kong city. You can enjoy traditional Chinese products at markets, where you will encounter some peculiar articles such as bird nets etc. You can also enjoy visiting the oldest temples. Actually, this region was the place the Brits landed at the first place. By walking in this area, you will see some of the old city scenery. You know, hong kong has naturally steep hills. And houses and shops are just established on that. Visit the markets and temples in this area.

The Central District

The central region is the modernized area of Hong Kong. You will see lots of skyscrapers including the headquarter building of HSBC. This region used to be called as "Victoria" named after Queen Victoria. It is hard to see the colonial state of Hong Kong any more here. Though the modernized city might fascinate you a lot, I suggest you to pay a visit to Victoria Peak. The best of the peak is not the scenery, but the tram going up the hill, which is claimed as one of the world's steepest tram climbing up hills.

Lantau Island

Lantau is the largest island in Hong Kong. However, the population of the island isn't large at all. Recently, thanks to the city development such as the emergence of the Disney land, the population is getting larger. On the other hand, this island has Hong Kong's international airport. The famous attractions for sightseeings are the Giant Tian Tan Buddha and Po Lin Monestery. The Buddha is the world's largest seated outdoor bronze Buddha. After watching the Buddha, you may wanna visit the Po Lin Monestery nearby, where you may enjoy its vegetarian feast.

Stanley

If you like shopping in a market, I suggest you to come to the Stanley Market, where you can enjoy various articles for sale such as a giant t-shirt, small and handy souvenirs, etc. When you are getting hungry, the waterfront promenade there provides you a variety of fashionable restaurants.

Cuisine

Hong Kong has variety of cuisine from all over the world. Naturally, Hong Kong has lots of Chinese restaurants. Actually, Chinese cuisine can be subdivided into several cuisine such as cantonese and pekingese. I suggest you to take cantonese, including the dim sum and yum cha. Other than that, you will encounter various kinds of cuisine with various kinds of ingredients.

Accomodation

In Hong Kong, it is pretty hard to find inexpensive accomodation. You may try the YMCA in Kowloon area though very advanced reservation is desired. Just be prepared to allocate some part of your budget to your accomodation.

Date of Travel

December 2005, for sightseeing.
